Do you really think that the world is bereft of the divine element?
Often this topic came up while I was working in various offices. I have changed my work places a number of times – maybe because way back in the early 90s, when we had just passed out of college, there weren’t any job portals nor were there any awareness regarding career options. The IT industry was just about taking shape so all we did was – pick up the Newspaper and look for vacancies especially in the Sunday and Wednesday issues – select couple of Interview venues and go to attend the Interview!!
After trying out a lot many options, I finally settled as an Academic Advisor in the IT and Multimedia Industry. I liked the environment …more because all I had to do was counsel candidates in an Air Conditioned office – an inhouse job (not going around and about and getting sun burnt) and also because I love to talk a lot! With so many students talking and sharing their maladies and happiness with me, it was basically more of a fun place for me…in the sense – since I loved doing what I was doing – I was actually having fun.
We discussed almost everything under the sky
As it happens with everyone, with colleagues (and students too in my case) – this discussion about God, afterlife etc. came up often. Most of the time it happened when there was some calamity – either natural or manmade – and at the end of a heated discussion like – how could it have been avoided, or who is to be blamed or why does such a thing happen at all or when will it all end…ultimately all our laments got directed towards God…..!!and then we all began to wonder whether there is someone called God!?
I have always been a die-hard devotee of God
Since my childhood – I have personally experienced many miracles of God….I don’t really know what people generally understand of miracles but for me a simple desire getting fulfilled is God’s miracle! Something as small as.. let’s say – I wished to have a pineapple flavored cake/ pastry…maybe just read it and kind of wondered or wished that I should also have it…and lo behold – by end of the day somehow or the other a box full of pastries reach me….this I take as a divine miracle…no one knew of this desire for I told no one – it just may have crossed my mind….now who reads minds?….and many more such things.
What I counter asked my friends on this topic of ‘Existence of God’…the Divine Presence
So my counseling began like this…..
Me: Have you ever had tea on a small street side tea stall?
They: Yes, of course.
Me: So what all do you see there – in that small tea stall?
They: Nothing to see there, we wait for the tea to get served.
Me: Ok let me elaborate – this person who makes tea for his customers – he must be having a pan or kettle to boil water, glasses to serve, soap to wash the glass, tea leaves, sugar, milk, match sticks or lighter, stove, a bench, a jar of biscuits, cloth to clean anything that gets spilled, cloth to hold the hot kettle or pan..what else.
They : Sieve…
Me: Oh! Yes of course the all important sieve – how could I forget that….so.
They: So what?
Me: So when just to give you a single cup of simple tea worth Rs. 2 or 3/- when a person has to organize so many things…do you really think that this world and us humans, animals, plants…all are hanging in mid-air..in a void?… with no one looking after us or organizing things for us?!
They: It is nature…
Me: What nature?! What is this consciousness then…this conscience that we have – when we do something wrong…we feel guilty….
They: We have been taught to be like that since childhood..
Me: You mean today, if I had some power and authority – I could have easily murdered you and stolen your money and gold chain and rings that you are wearing…..we would do this to each other then…..why behave well?…for what?
They : We live in a society..there are norms and rules…plus fear of police…
Me: That’s it? Are you serious? Well, Police can be bought off with money…it happens everywhere – so? And are you trying to tell me that it is just the fear of Police – couple of human beings born among us, studied with us…who happened to pass the IPS examination…they suddenly become ‘fearsome’ and we all start behaving well!? You must be kidding right?
They: Then why can’t we see God?
….Coming up Next: Then Why Can’t We See God.
